Keep calm and go to the park

23.06.16

Amongst all the chaos and the hustle and bustle of city life, it sure is nice to know that there’s a nearby place of total contrast to escape to. No huge buildings dominating the skyline, no car horns blaring, and no herds of people walking at snail’s pace side by side along the high street. A place to immerse yourself in the glorious sounds of birdsong and the wind in the trees. A place where you can really get in touch with nature and all that’s beautiful about it.

In Birmingham, we’re a lucky lot. While we are very privileged to be able to call this amazing city home, we also have a number of stunning, picturesque parks and nature reserves dotted around the outskirts of the city centre. Let’s start by telling you about The Birmingham Botanical Gardens: Fifteen acres of beautiful landscaped gardens with 7000 plants, shrubs and trees, four glasshouses showcasing a vast range of exotic plants, art gallery, tea room, and a gift shop. The Botanical Gardens is available to hire, and is ideal for wedding venues and parties. There is an open-air theatre during the summer for live music, and they are also available to local schools for educational visits.

A little further south of the city, there’s the famous Cannon Hill Park, complete with boating lake! This wonderful park, made up of 80 acres of formal parkland and 120 acres of conservation and woodland plantation, was donated to the citizens of Birmingham by Miss Louisa Ryland expressing her wish that the Park would prove a source of healthful recreation to the people of Birmingham.

Venturing further out, there’s Moseley Bog & Nature Reserve, which was actually a popular playground for Lord of the Rings author J R R Tolkien. He has said that it was the inspiration for the “old forest” in the books, and people from all over have visited the bog to experience his inspiration for themselves. There are also some remains of Victorian Gardens in the reserve, as well as evidence of human activity dating back 3000 years throughout, including clay pits and two Bronze Age burnt mounds.

Our wonderful  city features some amazing sights (especially if you’ve ever dined at the top of The Cube or the brand new Park Regis Hotel, or lived in Beetham Tower), but if you’re looking for a break from all that concrete for sights more bright, beautiful, great and small, we thoroughly recommend exploring one of these wonderful places.

Park Regis Hotel

06.05.16

On 29th March this year, a luxurious new hotel located at the very top of Broad Street opened its doors to the public. The Park Regis Hotel, at 160 Broad Street, is the company’s first Europe hotel and has provided Birmingham with a fabulous new 4 star experience featuring the 1565 restaurant, bar and terrace on the 4th floor (open to the public), and the Birmingham’s second rooftop bar and restaurant – the Rofuto Japanese restaurant and the Kurabu cocktail lounge, both located on the 16th floor of the building – the first being the Marco Pierre White restaurant at the top of The Cube.

The Rofuto restaurant operates a strict pre-booking policy, and the Kurabu cocktail bar is only accessible for hotel guests. However, we were lucky enough to visit the bar on its opening night, Tuesday 26th April, to sample their delicious cocktails (we recommend the Midnight Geisha) and admire the city from a bird’s eye view.

From the comfort of your seat, you can look out across the majority of leafy Edgbaston, you can see the BT Tower, and you can even see as far as the West Bromwich Albion football ground. The staff were very welcoming and attentive, providing smiley table service and ensuring our empty glasses weren’t empty for long. It’s safe to say that it won’t be our last visit to the hotel and its bars & restaurants!

Our new home

21.03.16

You may remember us mentioning our big move not so long ago, from our home of 4 years on Calthorpe Road, to Frederick Road. Well, you’ll be happy to know we made it here in one piece, and the office looks fab! There’s finally enough room for our growing team, and even space for a couple more. We also have a lovely seating area for visiting clients, right in front of the big arch window, and a luxurious meeting room on the second floor.

We are continuing to offer our outstanding lettings, sales and property management services, in addition to our investments department offering a wide variety of exciting opportunities for investors all over.

As you can see, our new location is every bit as pretty and picturesque as the majority of the premium Edgbaston addresses that we typically operate in. Our heart is and will always be in this beautiful district of Birmingham and its ever-buoyant property market.

If you’re in the area, feel free to pop in and say hi 🙂

Greenfield Cresent

The new Edgbaston Village

19.02.16

Plans for the new Edgbaston Village are well underway, as planning permission has been granted to Calthorpe Estates to create six brand new retail units, premier student apartments and Grade A offices on Greenfield Crescent. As well as this, just around the corner, on Harborne Road, works will soon commence on properties opposite Morrisons supermarket to convert them into luxury one and two bedroom rental apartments, and the Birmingham Medical Institute Conference centre will be being transformed into an attractive new restaurant and wine bar called The Physician.

If you check out the Edgbaston Village website, you can see an artist’s impressions of what the new retail units on Greenfield Crescent and Harborne Road will look like. The units will be available from Autumn 2016, and are anticipated to welcome even more visitors to the area, which is already home to many charming bars and eateries such as El Borracho de Oro (exquisite Spanish restaurant and tapas bar), The Edgbaston Boutique Hotel and Cocktail Lounge and The Blue Piano, which serves an enchanting mixture of Thai food and live jazz music – played on an actual blue piano by guest musicians.

At Davidson Estates, we’re already ecstatic to be able to call Edgbaston home, and we’re super excited for things to come. With so many improvements having taken place in the city recently, we can’t wait to see what more Edgbaston has to offer us.

Happy New Year, folks!

07.01.16

By now, we expect most of you will be very much back at the grindstone after a well-deserved break over Christmas and new year, trying to at least make a start on your new year’s resolutions (don’t pressure yourself too much – according to research by the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania, only a tiny 8% of people actually succeed in keeping theirs!)

2015 exceeded all of our expectations, and was actually a really really good year for us. We’ve made a bunch of new friends with whom we hope to build long-lasting relationships, we had a great year for property sales and an absolutely fantastic one for residential lettings and management. We gained two new members of staff – Rhianna and David, and both have settled into our team splendidly. We are thoroughly looking forward to continuing our fantastic relationships with all of our existing clients, and anticipate that we’ll begin many new relationships with buyers, sellers and investors alike.

We expect that 2016 will be even better than last year, and we can’t wait to tell you all about it at the end!

Merry Christmas everyone!

22.12.15

It is most definitely the most wonderful time of the year, and we would like to take this opportunity to send out our warmest Christmas wishes to each and everyone of you. May your turkey be roasted to perfection, your gifts well-received and your mistletoe be placed in abundance throughout your house (insert winky-face emoji here).

We have had a wonderful year here, and we are very much looking forward to welcoming in the new one. We’ve met a few new faces and started some new relationships throughout the year, and continued to provide our best possible service to our existing clients. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with each and every one of you, and long may it continue. But, now that the festive period is officially upon us, we know we won’t be the only ones glad of a few lazy mornings and time to spend with our loved ones.

Our office will be closed from 4:00 pm on 22nd December right through to 4th January, so let us also wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

Right, we’re off to The Edgbaston Cocktail Lounge for our Christmas party! See you all next year…….x

It’s December – Christmas movie time!

09.12.15

It’s officially an acceptable time of year to start watching your favourite Christmas movies to get you in the festive mood. Here are our top 10 reasons why we love the run-up to Christmas:

  1. First of all, let’s start with a clear favourite of everyone’s – Love Actually. Because we all actually love love, don’t we? And who doesn’t love a film which tells a bunch of heartstring-tugging love stories all at the same time, the majority of which we can all relate to. You’ve got the cute schoolboy with a huge crush, you’ve got the unrequited love situation (which actually turns out not so unrequited, when she gives him that much needed peace of mind by planting one on his lips), and you’ve got the one where the handsome Prime Minister falls for a member of the household staff, then fires her, then goes knocking the doors of every house in the road she lives in to get her to be his girlfriend. Oh, you’ve never had that?… Well, anyway, this brilliant film just seems to touch so many emotions all at the same time. And the best thing about it is that not all of the tales told are the usual stereotypical love stories, but they still manage to warm our hearts all the same, and remind us that love is always present in one form or another.
  2. It’s A Wonderful Life – what is Christmas without this classic? This one is always high on people’s list of festive favourites, instilling the beauty of humanity in all of us.
  3. Home Alone – just a staple must-watch for every 90s kid at Christmas, this movie brings floods of nostalgia every time.
  4. Elf – Will Ferrell is simply hilarious in everything he does! What a genius. And what better way to fill your heart with that good old Christmas spirit than a grown man who was raised as, and still very much is one of Santa’s elves?
  5. The Holiday – because Jude Law.
  6. The Grinch – because of Jim Carey and the constant energy he brings to every character, not even just this one. And, because the Grinch eventually finds the true meaning of Christmas, AND he gets the girl!
  7. The Muppet Christmas Carol – you can learn a lot of important lessons from this film. Like: don’t be a mean boss! Jim Henson’s adaptation of the 1843 Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol was a great way to bring the story to kids of the 90s.
  8. Miracle On 34th Street – another childhood classic, nostalgic and magical.
  9. The Santa Clause – just imagine if your dad became Santa Clause, wouldn’t it just be the best thing ever!?
  10. Die Hard – we just love this romantic, action-packed heart warmer of a movie.

How warm and fuzzy do you feel right now? Bet you can’t wait to get into your fluffy slippers and whack on a Christmas film when you get back home tonight!

NB: The writer of this blog really loves Loves Actually.

Market your property this Christmas

01.12.15

We know, sounds crazy! Right?

Well, Rightmove seem to think it’s a splendid idea; especially being as, last year, they had over one million visitors to their website on Christmas Day alone, and it appears that millions of property hunters visit the site throughout the whole Christmas period. It seems that, as soon as the dinner’s been eaten and the Queen’s speech is over, people jump straight back into the property search. Perhaps it’s because the Christmas period is actually the only free time they have had to have a proper look at the market. Or, maybe they feel that they make their best decisions after a couple of glasses of mulled wine. Either way, the statistics show that December and January are not as quiet as you may think, and that it may just be a great idea to pop your property on the market for the festive season.

When you think about it, it makes sense to get your property out there for people to look at over the festive period, when everyone is home from work and generally not as busy as usual. People tend to just find themselves half watching what’s on TV and half browsing through properties for sale on Rightmove and Zoopla. Well, it makes sense to us, anyway.

If you are considering putting your property up for sale, simply contact us to arrange for a visit from our Sales Director for a valuation. Similarly, if you have a property to rent out, our Lettings Manager will provide you with an estimation on rental income and guide you through marketing the property through us.

Mailbox

Living The Mailbox Life

18.11.15

Since first opening in 2000, the Mailbox has been the epicentre of style and extravagance for frequent shoppers, diners and socialites. Now, this year, Birmingham’s most desirable retail and social destination reopened it’s doors to the public after a two year-long refurbishment, making it only more luxurious.

The Mailbox has a new concept – The Urban Room – a skylit space which is home to many luxury retailers such as BOSS, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, with more top names arriving in early 2016. It is a space for shoppers to enjoy during the day, as well as an impressive destination for Birmingham’s events, exhibitions and social activities after retail hours.

Also in 2016, The Mailbox will be bringing out an app, which will include features such as a reward scheme for points earnt when you spend, ability to book tables and access to the Mailbox Life magazine.

The refurbishment of The Mailbox is certain to add even more appeal to living and investing in this fantastic city and the surrounding areas. The city is currently thriving, with redevelopments taking place all over, reminding us all how lucky we are to be able to call this amazing city “home”, and to be living amongst such exciting experiences.
