“Where the trees begin”
Edgbaston traditionally has a reputation for being one of the most affluent and upmarket parts of Birmingham. In the 19th century, it was under the control of the Gough-Calthorpe family. They refused to allow factories or warehouses to be built in the area, thus making it more attractive to the middle class. The Calthorpe Estate stretches through Edgbaston and into Harborne, and is home to the University of Birmingham which was established as Birmingham Medical School in 1825.
Today, the suburb of Edgbaston has adapted to contemporary life. This unique “garden suburb”, home to Edgbaston Cricket Ground, is situated only a few minutes from the city centre, and is an enormous asset to the city of Birmingham. With plenty of convenient transport links around the area such as Five Ways train station which runs through to New Street station and to University train station, and many bus connections. Travelling from leafy Edgbaston into the bright and vibrant city is fast and simple. Also, with the new village development underway on Calthorpe Estate, a host of new businesses, restaurants and high end retailers will bring even more elegance and sophistication to this already beautiful part of Birmingham.
The area is still very popular with students of the university renting apartments nearby, and with families looking for their ideal home to buy in high end locations such as Westfield Road, Farquhar Road and Richmond Hill Road.
